| Upper Part of a Sarcophagus |
XXVI-XXX Dynasty, 711-332 a.C. Sizeable upper part of a wooden sarcophagus, the owner is depicted wearing a tripartite headdress with black and white band, bronze and alabaster inlaid eyes with the pupil painted in black, the mouth smiling in an enigmatic attitude. Three vertical lines of hieroglyphs for the deceased, probably a priest. Perfect condition. Anthropoid coffins, were believed to be the idealized substitute for the deceased should something happen to the body. The face on the coffin was essential, even though it was seldom a true portrait of the deceased and more often representational. The tomb was the deceaseds eternal house, and the coffin an enclosure to safeguard his earthly remains, or spirit. In this setting, life would be insured in the afterworld in the same way as on earth. To the ancient Egyptians there was no difference between the coffins function and its religious importance; they were intertwined. A wooden coffin, with its painted, symbolic, sacred decorations and scenes, was paramount to the devout. Cod. 176/2002 |

| Mummy bead net |
Late Period, 740-300 B.C. A Mummy net panel composed of a lattice of turquoise tubular beads. This panel of blue faience mummy bead netting once rested atop the bandages of a mummy. The composition uses three kinds of beads in various hues of green, gray, and blue: medium serrated tubes and small rings for the field, and long smooth tubes for the border. The serrated beads were arranged to produce a diamond pattern, with the smooth beads providing a solid frame. The bead-networks of the Late Period are thought to derive from the costumes worn by goddesses, although they are found on mummies of both sexes. When they initially appeared, they were a simple covering over the body with winged scarabs and images of the Four Sons of Horus worked in. By the Late Period they had incorporated occasional bands of text and a face mask, all executed in painstaking patterns of tiny coloured faience beads. Cod RPS 184/2006 |
